Sundial Whistler

The Sundial Hotel is an owner-operated hotel located in the heart of Whistler village. The owners wanted to improve the image of the hotel through both the exterior building appearance and the interior suites. SSDG was brought on board to collaborate with the architect, Rositch Hemphill Architects on designing details for interior suite layouts and to provide concept ideas and finish specifications as well as the complete furniture package including casegoods, draperies, linens, smallwares and lighting.

The owners definitely wanted to be different and introduce unique elements and finishes that their clientele could enjoy and would remember. In some way, they needed to distinguish themselves from the other ski resort hotels in the area. Their market consisted of the individual traveler, school groups, families and some executive groups. They wanted to keep this market but yet appeal to a higher end market of executive groups as well.

The hotel needed to give the visitor a ‘sense of where they are’ and be comfortable and inviting. The owners preferred a more traditional approach, not too rustic and the use of texture i.e. natural woods and metals appealed to them also. The finishes needed to be durable and cleanliness was important also. SSDG captured this new interior image by combining warm rich tones and finishes with interesting materials and textures to make the suites unique and enjoyable.

Some of the elements that make this hotel ‘different’ are as follows:

  • Updated kitchen layouts using and I-shape configuration and island design.
  • Interesting use of materials: granite, wood and metal.
  • Corner fireplace configurations with rusty metal hood, cedar mantel and TV above.
  • Open jacuzzi tubs to some of the master bedrooms.
  • Residential quality drapery throughout.
  • Down duvets and quality fabric for duvet covers that are appropriate for a boutique setting.
  • New bronze accessories and hardware throughout.
  • Unique pieces of furniture throughout the suites, emulating ‘found’ pieces instead of a typical hotel suite with all the furniture matching.
  • Interesting lighting, and again all different types.
