BRING ON 2017!
For many, 2016 couldn’t have ended soon enough and would best be forgotten. While we’re really excited for what the next year brings we’re still reminiscing about what monumental year 2016 was for SSDG Interiors. 2016 began with the announcement that we would be working with some great new clients including Absolute and Knight Piesold.
Then came the highly anticipated move in day for client ACL Services who took over four floors of the brand new 980 Howe building. Their new office design was successful in achieving all of the clients goals, and going one-step further to additionally promote new workplace standards that encourage people to cross-pollenate within the company; support each other, share ideas, and inspire collaboration. The adopted design strategies facilitate flexibility and adaptability of their workplace in the future, and promote well-being through a healthier office environment in which exercise and interaction is planned for and encouraged. When asked about their new space, VP of Talent Kathy Enros explained “it was a total game changer for our culture, engagement and brand.”
For Valentine’s Day, Team SSDG decided to spread the love around the office. Everyone in the office got to pick the name of one of their fellow SSDG’ers and wrote a note letting them know just how awesome they are. Here’s a few of the special messages about our amazing team:
Tonya – “Beautiful, enthusiastic, dedicated, energetic & determined”
Herb – ” Knowledgeable & approachable”
Mike – “Without a doubt he will welcome you with a smiling face everyday.”
Spring brought renewed youth and energy to SSDG in the form of three new team members, Annie, Jen and Elli. Spring turned to summer and after years of watching longingly out our windows at the Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike circling the block around our office, we finally had our chance to tear around the city on that magnificent vehicle. We set a goal; raise $1,500 by June 27th when we would ride the 30 person Big Bike for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Not only did we meet that amount but with the help of a number of generous donors we doubled it, raising just over $3,000. That alone is pretty incredible, and it makes us proud to be surrounded by so many generous individuals and companies all wanting to give back. This show of generosity inspired us to top up the donation amount from $3,000 to a grand total of $5,000!
With our ONE Global Design partners, we collaborated with Mannington Commercial to create two new product lines – Intrinsic, a carpet tile with inspiration from nature and Infused, a Luxury Vinyl Tile that takes its inspiration from visuals drawn from New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, and Mexico City, cities with member firms in ONE Global Design. The two lines were launched at NeoCon in June, receiving critical acclaim in the industry including a number of awards.
In June, founding partner Gerry Shinkewski announced his plan to retire at the end of September and veteran employee and Associate Kenna Manley was announced as his successor. Kenna has been with SSDG for more than a decade, starting as a student and quickly growing to the talented designer and strong leader she is today. She has led many award winning projects and she will compliment Susan and Julie’s skills to ensure SSDG continues to grow and prosper.
On one of those gorgeous Vancouver summer days, the team played hooky and went down to Spanish Banks for a beach day. Our grill master, Gerry, got the burgers and dogs on the grill while we played bocce, ladder golf and enjoyed the beach. It of course wouldn’t have been an SSDG party without an SSDG tailored game…so we played, ‘Name That Project!’ With 4 teams made up of a mix of SSDG veterans and newbies, each team had to guess the projects on the custom flash cards – thanks Tonya! Congratulations to Team Shauna for taking the grand prize and Team Herb for placing second! The day finished up in the evening with some beach volleyball. So, yeah – a perfect day.
In September, the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada, BC chapter (AWMAC BC) has awarded SSDG Interiors along with Reotech Construction and Wanes Custom Woordworks an Award of Excellence in Quality & Service for the ACL headquarters in Vancouver. We’re so proud to receive recognition for this incredible project and would like to extend our thanks to Reotech and Wanes for going above and beyond in their service to ensure that our vision was executed with such precision.
The IDIBC Shine Awards held their annual Awards of Excellence evening on September 23 and we were thrilled that our design of JLL Vancouver won an Award of Merit. Their new workplace allows JLL to be flexible and adaptable while giving them the much-needed opportunity for growth. They now have a space they can showcase to their current clients, prospective clients and others in the industry. It sets them apart in the busy and competitive Vancouver market.
It was a packed house at ACL’s offices at the end of September to hear from Vancouver tech industry leaders Kathy Enros of ACL, Ben West of Eventbase, and Alysia MacInnes of A Thinking Ape. Our very own Julie Campbell moderated this discussion about culture in the workplace and how the design of the office can affect culture. This engaging discussion had each panelist touch on how they created an environment that is both an optimal space for employees to do their best work and allows their company culture to thrive.
Well with a rock and roll theme at this years JDRF Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes in October, we geared up with tutu skirts, bangles, and cowboy hats to represent the eras of Madonna and rode our little hearts out. The event took place in 19 cities across Canada including Vancouver where each rider had a turn to ride a stationary bike as fast as they can for 7 minutes. It was great fun and so good to see other teams from companies all over Vancouver sweating for this great cause. With the generous support of our friends and colleagues we reached our goal of raising $1,125 and JDRF raised nearly $375,000!
We tested the capacity of the stage at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel ballroom in November when nearly our entire office packed on to receive the Top Interior Design Award for NEWH Vancouver Chapter. It was a fantastic event put on by our local chapter of NEWH to celebrate hospitality design where we enjoyed tours of the recently renovated hotel rooms, an incredible spread of food including a poutine bar (genius!), and networking with industry peers.
In December our team descended upon Frog Hollow in East Vancouver to help hundreds of school age children make gifts for their families this holiday season. We Care is an annual event put on by Herman Miller with the support of a number interior design and architectural firms in Vancouver. Each firm comes up with a craft for 250+ kids to make unique gifts for loved ones; our craft was canvas shopping bags with custom crayon iron-on designs. It was another fun and heartwarming year with the kids who always impress us with their creativity.
You could say that 2016 was pretty legendary for SSDG; a year of great projects, team fun, industry acclaim, and community support. As we look back on a fantastic year, it only makes us that much more excited about what’s in store for next year. Bring on 2017!
